Diphu Farmer Unearths World War II Ammunition

WW II Ammunition Unearthed by Plough

A large quantity of 303 ammunition weighing around 25 kilograms plus one Lee Enfield rifle and one grenade from World War II period were unearthed by Narayan Malakar of Ekerani Doyal village situated near Bokajan police station yesterday. The discovery was made when Narayan Malakar was plowing his paddy field.

The hard shell of the grenade, rifle and the ammunitions struck the metal end of the plough and the curious peasant dug up the area. The entire quantity of ammunitions and the rifle was covered with thick stratum of mud and all the delicate parts of the rifle were rusted. The jittery Malakar informed the Bokajan police without delay, and they later retrieved the dumped ammunition from the farm land.

Looking back to the invasion of Myanmar, the British army transformed a number of places in and around Bokajan into a garrison and until the end of World War II, most of the military activities took place in this area.

Markings on the bullets indicate that the stock came from a war surplus stockpile.
