Hammering Blow For North Korea
Another round of sanctions against North Korea was unanimously adopted by the United Nations Security Council, sparking outrage from the communist regime.
The US-drafted resolution came with new sanctions with major goals; cut North Korea’s crude oil imports and oil products, ban textile exports, and ban new visas for North Korean overseas workers
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley hailed the new sanctions as “the strongest measures ever imposed on North Korea.” She highlighted that the US is “not looking for war,” and said if Kim continues to develop nuclear weapons, “we will continue with further pressure.”
Monday’s text is the ninth resolution unanimously adopted by the 15-member council since 2006 over North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear programme. This move came in as a punishment after Pyongyang’s sixth and powerful nuclear test on September 3.
China and Russia Back The Resolution
Russia and China backed these sanctions against the communist regime as a punishment for the regime’s nuclear weapons program. However, the two nations warned that they would not support any plan to oust leader Kim Jong Un. Both countries highlighted that they will only back sanctions that halt the regime’s nuclear proliferation. They want a diplomatic solution.
The UN ambassadors from the two countries asserted they agree on the “four nos” – no regime change, no regime collapse, no stepped-up reunification and no military deployments north of the border separating North and South Korea.
North Korea Threatens US Again
North Korea was outraged by the hammering sanctions. The regime hurled threats at the United States.
The regime threatened the US with the “greatest pain” after receiving the slapping sanctions from the world’s body.
Han Tae Song, North Korea’s ambassador to the UN, said, “The forthcoming measures by DPRK [the Democratic Republic of Korea] will make the US suffer the greatest pain it has ever experienced in its history,” he said, speaking at a UN conference in Geneva.
Aside from that, the Pyongyang’s envoy to the UN accused Washington of opting for “political, economic and military confrontation.”
