Kashmiri Woman Gives Birth to Quintuplets

Srinagar, May 10: In a rare case, a Kashmiri woman gave birth to five children- three boys and two girls – at a hospital in Indian administered Kashmir on Thursday.

Officials in L D hospital, leading maternity hospital in Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, said a woman named Afroza, a resident of Larkipora village of central Kashmir, gave birth to five babies after a cesarean operation.

“At 10:30am Afroza delivered five babies after a smooth cesarean,” said a senior doctor.

He said the patient was admitted in the hospital a day before. “The operation was a routine one and doctors were only worried about the mother’s health,” he said.

“We had no difficulty in conducting the operation, it was a smooth one. We had already asked for the extra blood as we thought the patient may need it,” he said.

The doctor said four infants weigh over two kilograms each, which is considered “normal” and the fifth baby developed some complications and it has been taken to Kashmir’s leading hospital for specialized treatment.

“The baby was found to be in distress. He is also lightweight, compared to the other four babies. We have referred him to SKIMS,” the doctor said, adding that it is the first such successful operation to be conducted in Lal Ded hospital.

There was a rush of visitors to see these quintuplets in the hospital. In view of the huge rush of visitors, the hospital administration had to deploy six security men outside the Neonatology ward to maintain order.

Meanwhile, the Health Minister R S Chib congratulated the team of doctors for the successful delivery. “The development is totally surprising. I must appreciate the doctors for conducting a successful surgery as all five babies are in good condition,” he said.
