Assam’s Biren Sing Engti Facing Corruption Charges

Diphu: Biren Sing Engti, the congress MP from Assam’s hill area, whose name is frequently linked with corruption charges, has so far managed to escape the accusations, but sources say he may find it hard this time.

Two individuals from his constituency filed a PIL case against the old congress hand in Guwahati High Court, alleging that he siphoned a huge sum of money from the MP LADF ( member of parliament local area development fund), that was meant for various development works within his electorate.

The campaigners have alleged the MP gobbled up a large sum of money from various works done within the Lumbajong development block.

The Guwahati High Court ordered a special investigation on the matter, based on the merit of the PIL and has fixed December 11 as the next date of hearing the case. The Court also summoned a detailed written statement from the petitioners on the matter.

“The timing of the PIL is somewhat peculiar. You see it has come up at an instance when the three MLAs loyal to the MP are constantly campaigning against HAD Minister Khorsing Engti for his removal and the Minister himself is steering the rebellious executive members of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council to oust the MP loyal Chief Executive Member of KAAC Joy Ram Engleng from his post. Indications of settling political vendettas of the congress leaders is ample; but all this will only wane out party conditions before the general election,” said a senior district congress member.
