Assam Autonomous State Committee Chief Optimistic About Discussions

Diphu September 10: In Assam, the Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) chief convenor, Bijoy Teron, described the recently held official level tripartite discussion on auto state issue in New Delhi as positive.

Teron informed the local media in Diphu after his arrival from Delhi yesterday, saying that home ministry officials have asked them to furnish a structure and modalities to shape the ground for an autonomous state as incorporated in the constitution at their next meeting.

Teron emphasized however, that JACAS will not give up until the Centre agrees to create an autonomous state.

“Government representatives present in the discussion tried their best to divert the issue at the initial stage. But after lots of logical discussion, they conceded our point and agreed to continue talks which spin around the constitutional provision made regarding the auto state. During the itinerary of discussion, we opposed the anticipated amendment of the sixth schedule. If this is allowed, maximum power of the KAAC will be retrieved to the Assam government” Bijoy Teron, chief convenor of JACAS said.

Mr. Teron expressed his view regarding the implementation of the MoS (Memorandum of Settlement) signed between the now disband UPDS (United Peoples Democratic Solidarity) and the government and the proposed amendment of the sixth schedule of the constitution to accommodate the cardinal clauses of the tripartite agreement. He said that when the signatories of the MoS have rejected the agreed document there is no question of others accepting it.
