Chandan Borah, proprietor of Karbi Agro Processing Industry based in Japrajan, Karbi Anglong, can be portrayed as an idyllic manufacturer who has shown the way how to promote organic food endemic to northeast India in the global market.
Working singlehandedly, this young entrepreneur began this brilliant initiative in 2009 and focused on the export of his products largely to USA, Australia, Japan, China and Germany.
With each passing day, more countries showed interest in his pure and unmodified organic products. His export products include King Chilly (Bhut Jolokia), Turmeric, Black Cardamom, Ginger, Elephant apple and varieties of rice.
In different countries throughout the world, he markets his produces entirely through online selling and order procurement. Although worldwide response to his product is quite encouraging, in contrast, response from domestic consumers is not very encouraging, with the exception of Maharastra and north-eastern states.
Around 40 skilled employees work around the clock with elegant machinery in extreme hygienic condition to process the organic food materials. Each packet of King Chilly (Bhut Jolokia), Turmeric, Black Cardamom and Ginger gets through value addition before dispatching for export process for European and American market.
Most organic food items he process are seasonal and grown in extreme natural conditions in villages of Assam and other neighbouring states. From May to September, he procures the materials from various places in north east India such as Teok, Tinsukia, Namti, Bhoju of upper Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. Chandan Borah sometimes imports ginger from Nigera, he produces Ginger Solid and powder. King Chilly exported from this industry to Europe and America are largely in the form of pickles, dehydrated and powder.
Beside this cardamom, Elephant apple is also exported after processing in his agro processing unit with approximately 60 ton chilly products as exported annually. Producers of Anglong Agro Processing Industry includes Magic Rice, Golaghat Joha ( best quality organic rice) King Chilly products, Ginger products, Elephant Apple products, Sugar Apple and various products of Turmeric powder.
As an industrialist, he also believes in cleanliness and quality of the product. The otherwise introvert Chandan Bora, who keeps away from media and public glare agreed to this interview grudgingly but at the end of the day he was candid enough to share some of his feelings with this correspondent.
Bora said that he was invited by various electronic channels for talk shows but he refused to attend them. Bora believes that publicity can push a businessman downhill. These days when he has accomplished something, he fondly recalled that before embarking on this business he was never interested in any kind of government job or politics. He always wanted to do something ingenious for his community and wanted to be a proud citizen of his state for a good cause.
