Roadside Bomb Hits UN Observer Convoy in Syria

At least six soldiers were wounded when a bomb hit a UN Observer Convoy while entering the city of Dara’a, Syria.

Reports say the roadside bomb exploded after the passage of four vehicles carrying the UN team, hitting the troops traveling behind them.

UN Spokesperson Ahmad Fawzi reported that there were no casualties among the observers, but several Syrian soldiers were injured and taken to hospital.

The Security Council has authorized the establishment of a United Nations observer mission to Syria, for an initial period 90 days.

A unanimous decision by Council members passed a resolution forming the “United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS), comprising an initial deployment of up to 300 unarmed military observers as well as an appropriate civilian component.”

The main task for UNSMIS is to monitor the cessation of violence in Syria and support the full implementation of a six-point plan put forward by Mr. Kofi Annan.

“[UNSMIS’ Chief Military Observer] General Mood told reporters accompanying his convoy that this was an example of what the Syrian people were suffering on a daily basis and that all forms of violence must stop.” -Mr. Ahmad Fawzi

On 27th of March 27, Mr. Annan reported that the Syrian government had accepted the six point-plan and pledged to implement it.

Council resolution 2042 calls on the Syrian government to honor all its obligations, including a sustained cessation of violence.

Rather than conform to that resolution, the Syrian regime unleashed another wave of violence against its own people. Scores of Syrians die every day.

The violence in Syria, began in March 2011 as a protest movement similar to those witnessed across the Middle East and North Africa. As of this month, it has claimed more than 9,000 lives, mostly civilians, and displaced tens of thousands.
