ULFA Attack Assam Police Station

Guwahati, January 22: At least one police personnel was injured and several vehicles were damaged, when anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) launched a major offensive in Assam’s Sivsagar district. They attacked Namtula police station along the Nagaland border on Monday night, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday night, around 11:45pm where an armed group of the banned organization attacked the Namtula police station.

“They triggered an explosion near the police station and started firing with automatic weapons,” a police official said.

“The armed group also lobbed a grenade, targeting the police station, but it missed the target and fell near a parked truck, which was caught up in a huge fire,” police said.

A policeman named Liladhar Chetia was injured in the militant ambush. He was admitted to Sivsagar civil hospital.

Three vehicles sustained heavy bullet damage.

Top police and army officials rushed to the area and launched a search operation against the militants.

Paresh Baruah alias Paresh Asom-led ULFA took responsibility for the attack. In a press statement, the group said that it was an attack targeting the security forces, to protest the brutal killing of Lalit Moran by the Indian army at Kakajan in Tinsukia district.

11 banned organizations of North East India including ULFA, NDFB called a boycott of Republic Day in the region and announced a general strike on January 26.
