U.S. Permanent Representative Susan E. Rice to the United Nations today said the United States welcomes today’s decision by the Security Council’s Al Qaida Sanctions Committee (the 1267 Committee) to add the terrorist group Tehrik-E-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to its sanctions list.
“Today’s action sends a strong message to those who support and finance terrorism, and reinforces U.S. efforts to disrupt, dismantle and defeat Al Qaida.” -Ms. Rice
She highlighted that to attacks against the people of Pakistan, TTP has carried out several notorious terrorist attacks against United States interests, including a December 2009 attack on a U.S. military base in Afghanistan and an April 2010 bombing against the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar.
She stressed that the group also claimed responsibility for the failed Times Square bombing plot in 2010. The United States designated TTP as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in September 2010.
“We encourage the 1267 Committee to continue its vigilance in designating groups that commit acts of terrorism worldwide.” -Ms. Rice
