Unidentified Mass Graves Evoke Indian Kashmir on Edge

Jammu and Kashmir State High Commission confirms the unmarked Graves of nearly 2,000 unidentified bodies that were found recently. Many of them disappeared after the insurgency in 1990. This incident came forward for the first time in 2008.

According to the state Human Rights Commission Report, the bodies of hundreds of men, described as unidentified militants, were buried in unmarked graves. The report says that 557 identified bodies are still buried in these graves while 2,156 remain unidentified.

The Human Rights Commission has now launched an inquiry and is seeking DNA samples to identify the bodies discovered in the mass graves.

Kashmir has been in the grip of insurgency since the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.

UN Human Rights Commission and the European Parliament take note of such unidentified mass graves in Indian controlled Kashmir. Meanwhile Pakistan has called upon India to punish those responsible for the 2,156 unidentified mass graves. Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq raised the issue of the unmarked graves in Kashmir at the OIC contact group on Kashmir.
