ULFA Militant Killed in Fierce Gun Battle in Assam

A hardcore cadre of the anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was killed and two army personnel were injured during a gun fight with security forces in Assam’s Goalpara District along with Meghalaya border on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of army and police launched a search operation at Khardang under the Krishnai Police Station in the district along the Meghalaya border.

“We were informed that a militant group was hiding in the area and we launched a search operation,” a police official of Goalpara District said.

When the troops reached the area, the militant group started firing and bullets were exchanged.

During the gun battle, a militant was killed on the spot and two army personnel were injured.

“The other members of the group managed to flee from the encounter site,” the police official said.

The militant was identified as Niyor Asom.

Security forces recovered one pistol, three magazines, five rounds live ammunition in the slain militant’s possession.
