A hardcore cadre of the anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was killed in a gun battle with security forces in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of police and army had launched a search operation at Torani forest area near Pengeri in the district on Wednesday night, where a militant group was hiding.
Based on an intelligence report, “when we reached the area, the militant group fired on the troops and bullets were exchanged,” a top police official said.
Reports say during the gun battle, a militant was killed on the spot and other militants managed to escape from the encounter area.
The slain militant was identified as Diganta Bora alias Wangle Moran and security forces recovered one AK-81 assult rifle with a magazine and ammunition in his possession.
Assam police had sounded high alert in a few districts of Upper Assam.
