The alleged suicide of a woman in Dispur police station, that was reported last week, has now been given a different verdict.
Guwahati city police commissioner, Mukesh Agarwal, ordered an investigation into the incident, lead by the Joint police commissioner, NMASF Haque. A report was requested within 48 hours.
That report lead to the suspension of two Sub Inspectors, found guilty of negligence, officials said.
The suspended Sub Inspectors were Pritilata Talukdar and Sanjib Kumar Chetry.
The dead woman, from Shillong in Meghalaya, allegedly committed suicide in the police station toilet, in the Kamrup (Metro) district on the night of July 5.
The woman was rushed to Guwahati Medical College hospital but the doctor declared her dead.
Initially, the identity of the woman was unknown, but police later ascertained her identity after checking her handbag, which contained a PAN card, an Electoral Registration Card and other items.
In the earlier story, it was reported that Akhil Gogoi, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samittee leader, alleged that police had first raped, then killed the woman. A number of of Meghalaya organisations have also requested a high level inquiry into this custodial death.
A Kamrup (Metro) district magistrate has ordered an additional district magistrate level inquiry into the incident.
