Over 559 animals including 14 one horned rhinoceros died in current wave flood in Kaziranga National Park, officials said.
According to reports, 14 one-horned rhinos, 475 hog deers, one wild elephant, one wild buffalo have reportedly died in the flood at the park.
The flood waters covered 85 percent areas in the park.
“The current condition is better in some areas of the park and we hope it will improve in the next few days,” an official of the park said.
“It was one of the major flood in Kaziranga since 2004,” a park official said.
According to reports, in 1988, 1203 animals died due to the floods including 38 rhinos. In 1998, 652 animals also died including 39 rhinos. And in 2004, 11 rhinos died in the flood at the park.
“We have still introduced time card in NH-37 which passed inside the park, for reducing speed limit of vehicles,” a park official said.
Many animals were forced to flee to higher lands in nearest Karbi Anglong district during the flood.
