Assam University to Host Workshop on Crime Against Women and Ethnic Violence

A day-long workshop on “Government and Civil Society joint strategy to combat crime against women and communal, ethnic violence” will be held at Assam University, Silchar on March 21, official said.

The workshop has organized by the Office of the Commissioner of Hills and Barak valley Division and Assam University.

All five Deputy Commissioners of Hills and Barrak Valley Divisions, Superintendent of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Magistracy), Executive Magistrates, all Officers-in-Charge of Police Stations and District Social Welfare Officer along with the 30 representatives from each District, 10 representatives from District National Solidarity and Integration Committee will participate in the workshop.

“The workshop is expected to orient participants to combat crime against women and communal and ethnic violence which is quite prevalent in the region,” a state government official said.

The objectives of this workshop are to analyse the causes and consequences of gender and communal, ethnic violence in general and specific to state, examine the existing institutional mechanisms to combat violence and their effectiveness, galvanise collective voice on the issues from social, religious, cultural and legal perspective, identify possible and effective solutions, measures and strategies for prevention of violence under Government and Civil Society partnership and enunciate strategies to sensitise masses and opinion leaders for lasting peace.
