Police Seize Weapons, Fake Number Plates From Car Thief House

On Wednesday night, security forces raided the rented house of arrested car thief Anil Chauhan. During their search operation at the home near Mirza, on the outskirts of Guwahati, police discovered and seized weapons, fake number plates and incriminating documents.

Guwahati city police commissioner Jyotirmoy Chakraborty said the search operation took place on Wednesday evening, at a home in Jamartol area near Mirza. During the search, they recovered three pistols, a shot gun, 17 rounds of live ammunition, 42 fake vehicle number plates, a vehicle and some incriminating documents. The police commissioner said the house was used by auto theft gang kingpin, Anil Chauhan, who is in police custody.

Chauhan’s wife, Rita Chauhan, surrendered to police on Wednesday. On Thursday, polive took Rita Chauhan to a local court in Guwahati, asking for a five day custodial sentence. The CJM court of Kamrup (Metro) reduced the time to three-days.

Police have linked Amil Chauhan with several other people, including Congress MLA, Dr. Rumi Nath, Dr. Nath’s estranged second husband, Jacky Zakir and Dr. Nath’s personal security officer (PSO) Debabrata Borpatra Gohain. An arrest warrant for Rumi Nath had been arranged, but she surrendered to police the next day.

The MLA, Dr. Nath, appeared before Kamrup CJM court last week. The court sentenced her to 14 days judicial custody, ending on April 27.

Also on Thursday, police arrested another car thief, identified as Abhijit Sarma, from Guwahati.
