Guwahati, September 5: A civil society group, Assam Public Works (APW) on Wednesday sought amendment of the Citizenship act 1955 for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update in the state.
During a press conference held in Guwahati, the chairman of APW Abhijit Sarma said, “the act should be amendment under which person born in India before July 1, 1987 eligible for citizenship, in which there have no status of parents. We demand that the Union government and the state government take initiative and amend the act,” APW Secretary Bitu Talukdar said.
Meanwhile, the Assam Chief Minister announced that the NRC update will end in the state in next three years.
In the first phase of the NRC update 42 assembly constituencies will be covered.
A RTI report revealed that the Union Home Ministry would not have any information from the Assam state government for NRC update.
Several organizations including All Assam Students Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded that the state government take initiative of the NRC updates soon.
