Another Assam Congress MLA Arrested, Sent to Seven Days Judicial Custody

Guwahati, April 30 : On Thursday, police arrested Assam Congress MLA, Siddique Ahmed, and a judge sent him to seven days judicial custody.

Siddique Ahmed, Assam Congress MLA and former minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led state government, allegedly absconded for the past several weeks over a 2011 assault case. That case was registered against the Congress legislator for his alleged attempt to murder Rezaul Karim in 2011. He was dropped from the ministry in 2014.

Police searched for Mr. Ahmed in the MLA hostel in Guwahati after an arrest warrant was issued against him. He was later arrested in his hometown, Karimganj.

The Karimganj (South) legislator on Thursday appeared before Karimganj Chief Judicial magistrate seeking bail in the assault case. The additional magistrate turned down his bail plea and sent Ahmed to seven days judicial custody.

Several supporters of the Congress MLA protested against the court order and the protest turned violent. At least 14 persons were injured in the clash with police.

“We were forced to resort to a lathi charge to control the situation,” a police official said.

Siddique Ahmed was not the first MLA to be arrested in the past month. On April 14, police arrested Assam Congress MLA of Borkhola constituency, Dr Rumi Nath, due to her alleged link with an auto theft racket.
