3 Militants, Soldier Killed in Ongoing Kashmir Gunfight

Srinagar, July 15: Three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants and an army man were killed and four soldiers injured in an ongoing encounter in Indian administered Kashmir.

“The top commanders of Lashkar-e-Toiba were present in the house of one Ghulam Muhammad Mir at Maidanpora, Lolab, some 120 kms North of Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir. On specific information, police and army men laid siege around the village and zeroed-in on the house where the militants were present,” a police officer said.

He said five family members were trapped in the house and all of them were evacuated safely. “After the evacuation of civilians, police and army men launched the operation to flush out the militants from the house,” he said.

He said three militants were killed and five army men including a capital injured in the day long encounter with troopers. “One of the injured soldier succumbed to injuries in the hospital,” he said.

“Two militants were stilled holed-up in the house and the exchange of fire is going on. The cordon has been further tightened in the evening,” he said adding things will be clearer in the morning.

However, bodies of the deceased militants have not been retrieved yet.

“The deceased soldier has been identified as Nayak Sumer Singh of 18 Rashtriya Rifles, hailing from the Indian state of Rajasthan.
