New UN Envoy Jan Kubis to Assist Afghanistan Amid Period of Transition

The new Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Afghanistan Jan Kubis today arrived in the capital city of Kabul to take the helm of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Jan Kubis will lead UNAMA in what he said would be “a new period” in the Central Asian country’s development.

“I am looking forward to be here in this period of transition, to be a good partner of the Government of Afghanistan.” – Mr. Kubis

He also said he is looking forward to his work in the partnership when the country is moving to a new period of its development. He added the United Nations will always stand by and is ready to help the country.

The UN has been providing assistance in Afghanistan for more than half a century. The world body is currently examining how it can best help the country as it proceeds with the transfer of security responsibilities and takes greater ownership of its development.

UNAMA is mandated to assist and support the government of Afghanistan in its state-building and development efforts.

Mr. Kubis succeeds Staffan de Mistura, who headed UNAMA from March 2010 through December 2011.

Mr. Kubis served as Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
