Security forces on Sunday arrested 12 hardcore NDFB(S) militants, including nine top leaders of the militant group in Assam’s Chiang district along the Indo-Bhutan border. This is the group that was involved in the recent massacre in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts, that left more than 80 people dead.
Assam police IGP of BTAD, Dr LR Bisnoi, said police, SSB and CRPF jointly launched an operation in three remote areas along the Indo-Bhutan border, where they arrested the militants.
Security forces also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from them.
“It is a major breakthrough for Assam police, arresting 12 hardcore NDFB(S) cadres, including nine top leaders of the extremist group,” Dr Bisnoi said.
Among the arrested militants, nine of them are the most wanted extremists by Assam Police, The police had earlier announced a cash reward for information leading to their capture.
The top police official said security forces recovered four AK-56 rifles, one point 303 rifle, one point 315 rifle, five pistols, four grenades, 12 magazines and 784 rounds of ammunition from the militants.
Earlier, police arrested seven hardcore NDFB(S) militants in Kokrajhar district.
On Saturday, one of Assam Police’s most wanted extremists, Jeblang alias Jagat Basumutary, an NDFB(S) platoon commander, was killed during an encounter with security forces in Kokrajhar district.
Security forces continued intensified operations against militants in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Indo-Bhutan border led by army and Assam police.
