Unidentified Disease Kills Nine in Diphu

Quoting information of a local source, a Diphu based vernacular daily has reported that nine children and one adult died, suffering from an unidentified transmittable syndrome in Paklonkam within a span of seven days.

According to doctors of the Dokmoka primary health centre, the patients developed acute pain near their tonsil gland and the victims were throwing up froth and gradually succumbed to pain and breathlessness. Local doctors have cautioned the people of the locality about the transmittable character of the disease.

According to information received from Dokmoka, the nearest township from Paklonkam (16 kilometer), nine children between the ages of 3 to 8 years and one adult have died. Civil organizations and local people appealed for rushing immediate medical help to Paklonkam and to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease in nearby areas.

It may be mentioned here that the affected area is an identified place on the tourism map of Assam where the famous Dikrupt waterfall is located. In the midst of wilderness, a beautiful tourist bungalow maintained by the Tourism department, people of the Karbi community settled in the area are well-known for their hospitable nature.

“Paklonkam Tourism Development Society and several NGOs are organizing a medical camp to rush remedial aid to the people of the affected spot. Please come and join us on Friday,” Davinson Terang, a local journalist said over the telephone.

Joint Director of Health services, Karbi Anglong district has remained incommunicado for his view on the matter until the report is filed.
