As the US prepares for a likely strike on Syria in response to the regime’s apparent use of chemical weapons against civilians, protests have popped up in places like Pakistan, England, and Canada as well as in the US.
Now Nepalis too have joined in. Protesters outside the US embassy in Kathmandu disrupted traffic this morning until police pressed then back onto the sidewalk and away from the embassy gate.
The group of a few dozen was comprised of members of the Nepal Revolutionary Students’ Union, a youth wing of the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party. The NWPP is a small communist party that dominates politics in the city of Bhaktapur near Kathmandu but has little following elsewhere.
Protesters declared themselves “anti-imperialist” and in sympathy with the “anti-imperialist state of Syria,” but most knew little about the country or the chemical weapons controversy when asked.
The protest broke up after about an hour.
