A 25-year-old youth was killed when CRPF personnel allegedly opened fire after coming under attack by a group of stone pelters just hours after five CRPF men were killed in a major militant attack at Bemina Srinagar on Wednesday.
The killing of 25-year-old Altaf Ahmad Wani comes just eight days after a post-graduate student was shot dead allegedly by the army in north Kashmir during a protest.
Police and locals said CRPF personnel were traveling back from SKIMS hospital where many of their colleagues were injured in a militant attack earlier at Bemina were undergoing treatment, when it came under attack in Zoonimar area.
Altaf Hussain Wani was hit by a bullet in the chest when CRPF personnel allegedly opened fire to clear a road of stone pelters in interior city en route to SKIMS hospital, they said.
Wani was rushed to SKIMS hospital in a critical condition and succumbed soon after.
Wani reportedly succumbed to injuries, according to Medical Superintendent of SKIMS hospital Dr Aijaz Ahmad.
“Throwing a few stones by youths on a passing police vehicle is not unusual these days, but paramilitary men’s response is inexplicable. Wani was far away from the place of stone throwing,” an eyewitness of Soura incident told.
Normal life was paralysed across the Kashmir Valley on Wednsday in view of strike called by Mutahida Majlis-e-Mushawarat (MMM) in support of its demand for the return of the mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru and JKLF founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat.
According to the sources the situation in the interior city was tense as more protesters swarm the roads after hearing about the death of Wani.
