Youth Killed, 2 Soldiers Injured in Kashmir

Srinagar, April 30: A 25-year old youth was shot dead by suspected militants in Kashmir while two Indian army soldiers were injured in a militant attack.

“25-year-old youth Shamusdin Mir was fired from point close range by suspected militants near his residence at Chankhan area of Sopore, some 54 kms North of Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, at around 2000 hours. He sustained critical bullet injuries and died while being taken to a hospital,” a police official said.

He also said a manhunt has been launched by police and army men to track down the assailants.

Meanwhile, two soldiers were critically injured in a militant attack in South Kashmir.

A police official said a group of militants armed with sophisticated weapons fired towards an army party patrol when they were laying siege around the Kakapora, Mewa area in Pulwama, some 35 kms South of Srinagar, Saturday morning.

“The soldiers returned the fire and in the ensuing gunfight, which continued for some time, two soldiers were injured. The injured army men were evacuated to the army’s base hospital in Srinagar,” he said.

Sources said during the course of gunfight, the militants managed to escape from the area. “Additional army men were rushed to the area and they have launched massive combing and search operation to flush out the militants. No arrests have taken place yet,” they added.
