ULFA Leader Killed in Gun Battle

A hardcore militant of anti-talk faction United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was killed during an encounter with security forces in Goalpara district along Assam-Meghalaya border on Sunday, police said.

“Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of police and army carried out the operation at Balbola area under Dhupdhara police station, where an armed group of ULFA hiding at a house,” a police official said.

Reports say when the security forces reached that place, the militant group started firing and bullets were exchanged. In which a militant was killed on spot and other three or four cadres managed to escape.

Security forces recovered one AK-56 rifle with magazine, a hand grenade and more than hundred rounds of live ammunition from the spot.

More security forces rushed to the area and search operation was launched.

A high official source of Assam police said Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and ULFA jointly established few camps along the Assam-Meghalaya border, particularly in Garo hills and involved in many unlawful activities in the area.
