Two Militants Killed in Gun Battle in Assam-Meghalaya Border

Guwahati, December 1: Two hardcore militants of the anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) were killed in a gun battle with security forces in Goalpara district along Assam-Meghalaya border on Saturday, officials said.

Security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the slain militant duo.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of army and police launched a search operation against the militants at Maradhara area under Lakhipur police station in the district.

“When we reached the area the militants firing on the security personnel, who were hiding at the area and forced to exchanged bullets,” a top police official said.

“Two militants were killed on the spot and the other militants of the outfit groups had managed to flee from the area and entered in Meghalaya side,” the official said.

Security forces recovered two pistols, 37 rounds live ammunition of an AK-47 rifle, six AK-47 rifle magazines, six detonators, two extortion notes of ULFA and GNLA in possession of the slain militants.

Meanwhile, security personnel launched a search operation along the border area to nab the fled militants.

ULFA established base camps in the bordering area with the help of a GNLA militant.

Top sources of Meghalaya police said that, ULFA and GNLA had collected Rs 4.30 crores through extortion and coal traders in Garo hills of Meghalaya in the past six months.
