Two Dehorned Rhinos Found in Kaziranga Park

Two bullet-sprayed bodies of one horned rhinoceros were found in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP) on Saturday, officials said.

Forest guards found the dehorned bodies inside the park.

A top official of the park said a carcass was found near Nalini forest camp under Agoratoli forest range office and another carcass found near Borakata Basti forest camp under Bagori forest range.

“When forest guards found the carcass of the two rhinos, their horns were missing,” the park official said.

Suspected poachers killed the rhinos three days before and managed to flee with their horns.

Poachers killed 20 one horned rhinos in the world heritage site so far this year.

Meanwhile, security forces recovered three rifles at Sotea areain Sonitpur district on Friday night.

Following a tip-off, a joint taem of Karbi Anglong and Sonitpur police launched an operation at Ghiladhari area and recovered one 303 rifle, one point 22 rifle and a US made carbine.

“Suspected poachers had hidden these arms at the area for future planning of rhino poaching inside the Kaziranga National Park,” a top police official said.

Recently, the Assam forest department had deployed 300 jawans of Assam Forest protection Force in the park to protect wild animals and to combat wildlife poaching.

The state forest department also used a drone in the park.
