Two Arrested for Illegal Possession of Firearms in Assam

Huge Cache of Arms and Ammunition Recovered in Guwahati, Two Held

Assam police on Wednesday recovered a number of weapons and a large amount of ammunition and explosives and arrested two persons in two separate incidents in Guwahati, officials said.

According to reports, based on intelligence received, local police launched an operation at NH-37 near the Jorabat area on the outskirts of Guwahati.

Police say they recovered one AK-47 rifle with two magazines, six rounds of AK-47 rifle ammunition, 164 rounds of live Insas rifle ammunition, and 380 rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition from a vehicle which was on its way from Nagaland to Tura in Meghalaya.

Security personnel arrested two persons identified as Biswajit Sangma and Runa Sangma who they said were involved in the illegal arms consignment.

“The arrested persons carried the arms-ammunition from Dimapur in Nagaland to Meghalaya and they were suspected to be involved with a terrorist group in Meghalaya,” a top police official said.

In a separate incident, police recovered 400 gelatin sticks, 200 detonators and 8 lengths of explosive wire at the Inter State Bus Terminal near Garchuk in Guwahati on Wednesday morning.
