Five top Gurkha militants arrested in Assam
Security forces on Monday arrested five hardcore militants belonging to United Gurkha People’s Organisation (UGPO) including its three top leaders in Assam’s Baska and Udalguri district, police said.
Assam police IGP of BTAD Dr LR Bisnoi said that, following a tip-off, Baska police launched an operation in various areas in BTAD and arrested the militants.
The arrested militants were identified as, Surjya Ale Magar (C-in-C of UGPO), Lal Bahadur Tamang (Chairman), Suresh Ghimirey (Vice Chairman) Arjun Chetri alias Arjun Rimal (cadre) and Birkha Bahadur Limbu (Cadre of UGPO).
“The militants took shelter in the BTAD area and were trying to spread out its base in lower Assam,” Dr Bisnoi said.
Earlier in the month of September 2014, police arrested five extremists of the militant group and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from them.
Security forces have so far arrested at least 39 militants of the NDFB(S) since the massacre in December last year, during various operations against the militant group.
On December 23 2014, NDFB(S) militants had killed at least 80 innocent Adivasi people in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts.
