Ten People Injured in Assam Clash

At least ten people including police personnel were injured in a clash between protesters and police in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district on Saturday, officials said.

Local people and traders protested against Sualkuchi in the lower Assam district for selling imported silk cloths. Thus, affecting the commerce of local silk industry.

The local people burned the imported silk cloths worth of Rs 35 lakh.

“Protesters collected the imported silk cloths from several shops and set them ablaze which triggered clash between local people and shop owners,” a top police official said.

The police tried to prevent the angry people from burning cloths, people pelted stones to security personnel and they retaliated by using batons,” police said.

At least ten people including security personnel were injured during the clash between police and local people.

Additional security forces were deployed to the area to control the situation.

Meanwhile, local people alleged that some traders are selling imported silk thread and cloths in the name of Sualkuchi paat-muga fabrics, which affected the Assamese unique golden muga silk and paat silk industry.
