Security forces arrested a militant of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) with arms in Goalpara district along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday, police said.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Assam police and army nabbed the militant, who identified as Ribul Ali from the Krishnai area.
“Security forces recovered one pistol with ammunition and one lakh rupees cash from his possession,” a police official said.
The Garo militant group is active in Garo hills in Meghalaya and in various areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Recently, a armed group of the extremists torched 14 nos coal laden trucks at the state border area.
A top police official said that, GNLA and Paresh Baruah led anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) jointly set up few camps in the Garo hills and they operated by collecting funds through extortion and such kind of unlawful activities.
