Assam: Second Rhino Poached This Year

Poachers killed another rhino in Assam and escaped with its horn on Friday.

According to reports received, the incident took place in the Laharia area near Dhing in Nagaon district.

Poachers killed the adult rhino which was stranded from Kaziranga National Park.

Local police said the poachers chopped off its horn and buried the body.

It is the second poaching incident this year. The first incident took place in the Kathalchang forest camp area under Burapahar range office in the national park. The poachers killed the male rhino in the early hours. At least 35 one horned rhinoceros were klled in the state in 2014.

On the final day of 2014, poachers killed a pregnant female rhino near Belsiri forest camp in the national park, escaping with the horn.

Assam lost 109 one horned rhinoceros in the past three years to poachers, and more than 400 big animals in the last decade.

In a separate incident, also on Friday, poachers killed an elephant in the Kilinggaon area under Dolamara reserve forest near Kaziranga.
