Police and Army Collaborate to Counter GNLA, UALA Militants

Guwahati: Assam police, Meghalaya police and army will jointly launch operation against Garo militant group Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) in the bordering areas of Assam and Meghalaya.

The decision was taken in a high level meeting held in Guwahati on Wednesday, after suspected UALA militants killed seven people in Goalpara district and five policemen gunned down by GNLA militants in South Garo hills on November 5.

“We have formed a joint control committee and decided to launched combing operation against the militant groups,” Assam police ADGP(Law & Order) AP Raut said.

The Army will led the operation against the militants in the neighbouring states.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya ADGP Yogesh Chandra Modi said both GNLA and UALA militants are active in bordering areas of Assam and Meghalaya.

“We will take stern action against the militants,” the top official of Meghalaya police said.

For preparing the combing operation, the high level meeting had decided to setup a joint control room in Goalpara district.

Meanwhile, the Home department of Assam state government had sent 50 companies of security forces on Wednesday to the trouble torn Rabha Hasong area.

The election of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council will be held on November 13 and 15 in two phases.
