People of Assam Celebrate Bhogali Bihu

Guwahatai, January 14: People of Assam celebrated the harvest festival Bhogali Bihu across the state on Monday.

Celebrations of Bhogali Bihu (Bhogali means handiness of rich food) or Magh Bihu began on “Uruka” on Sunday with community feasts and prayers to the fire God.

On Monday morning, people prayed to the Hindu God of fire and set on fire in the “Meji” and “Bhelaghar,” which was constructed of bamboo, hay, wood, thatch, dry leaves, etc. of heights up to 50 feet.

People ate various types of mitha aloo, muwa aloo, potatoes, which were roasted in the large fire of meji.

The festival is marked for feasts and bonfires and the people of Assam celebrated it across the state after the end of harvesting season.

People enjoyed the traditional and historical sports like Bulbul bird fight, egg fight, cock fight, buffalo fight, which were played in different parts of the state.

The traditional buffalo fight will take place at Ahataguri in the Morigaon district on January 15.
