NGO and GMC Collaborate in Campaign Against Use of Plastic

The GMC appealed to the people and the traders to take part in the drive against the use of polythene bags.

“It is a superb inititative by the GMC and we support the GMC to make it a success,” Seujee Dharanee, an Assam based NGO’s president Satya Ranjan Borah said.

The NGO carried out a survey in Guwahati and found that almost 70% of the people expressed their willingness not to use polythene bags, whereas 20% expressed their lack of education about the impact of polythene bags and 10% expressed their negligence to think about its impact.

“The reasons of the impact of polythene bags is very terrible and still we have time to act,” the NGO said.

Meanwhile, the GMC authority issued an order prohibiting use and sale of disposable plastic utensils and thermocol in the city.

“We directed to strictly comply with Rule 5, 8, 9 and 10 of the Plastic Waste Management rules, 2011. The people and traders of Guwahati should strictly comply with the directive. Otherwise action would be taken against them as dictated by the law,” a GMC official said.
