Nepal’s Maoist Party (UCPN-M) today demanded the political annulment of the Supreme Court’s guilty verdict and sentence of life imprisonment with seizure of property against Bal Krishna Dhugel. The Maoists claim the charge was fabricated.
The online edition of a national daily quoted Maoist spokesperson Dinanath Sharma saying that PM Madhav Kumar Nepal was positive about the demand.
Saying that the party would respect the Supreme Court decision, Sharma added the decision would be made defunct through a political arrangement and all other cases should be retracted.
Sharma reportedly said over 1,000 cases based on political vengeance against the UCPN-M leaders and cadres including Prachanda and Baburam Bhattarai were in different courts throughout the country.
Elected CA member from Okhaldhunga constituency no. 2 representing UCPN-M, Dhungel was accused of killing Ujjan Kumar Shrestha of Pokali VDC on June 24, 1998. He was found guilty by the District Court and was given a sentence of life imprisonment with confiscation of property. He served eight years in jail before being set free by Rajbiraj Appellate Court.
The case was decided on January 3, 2010 but only came to light about two weeks ago when the full text of the decision was made public.
