Negotiation Process Crucial to Achievement of Karbi Anglong’s Statehood

Diphu: JACAS (Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State) a accumulation of fifteen organizations of youths and students have indicated that in view of the green signal shown by the ministry of Home affairs and central government, they are in favor for tranquil mood to facilitate negotiation process.

The preparation for a forceful movement for achieving statehood from the third week of August has been put in abeyance to justify the seriousness of the Center. Informing this Laurence Teron, convener of JACAS said the Home department through its state counterpart has asked to submit personal details of the members of the team who will participate in the peace parley.

Although exact date and other modalities of the discussion has not been finalized it is anticipated that initial discussion will begin soon. The discussion will also includes other agitating organizations of Assam who has demanded separation from Assam. It is also not yet very clear whether the Center will discuss the issue separately with different groups.

Although the Union Home Ministry has sought five members delegation from each agitating organization, however the JACAS has decided to send a fifteen member team for discussion as the JACAS is an accumulation of fifteen organizations. It may be mention here that KLNLF (Karbi Anglong N C Hills Liberation Front), the Karbi Ultra organization under ceasefire, is sending a group to Delhi in recent times to discuss their demand for state as part of their peace process.

On the 20th of this month elected members of both Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao Autonomous Council will also meet the central leadership at Delhi to discuss the separate state issue; this has been informed by Joy Ram Engleng, Chief Executive Member of KAAC few days back.

It can be assumed that amid discussion between various groups demanding statehood for the autonomous areas of Assam possibility of disruptive agitation by any organization is negligible.
