Miscreants Set Ablaze Two Primary Schools and a Bridge in Goalpara

Guwahati, February 10: Violence continued in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council areas as miscreants set two schools and a bridge on fire in Assam’s Goalpara district on Saturday at midnight where a few organizations were protesting against holding the panchayat poll in Rabha Hasong area, officials said on Sunday.

The incidents took place at Krishnai and Dudhnoi, where miscreants set ablaze two lower primary schools.

“Unidentified persons set ablaze the Madpara LP School near Krishnai and Borpathar LP School near Dudhnoi on Saturday night and the buildings of the schools were completely damaged,” a district administration official said.

In a separate incident, miscreants set ablaze a wooden bridge at Khotapara-Ambari area in the district.

“A few organizations protested against holding the panchayat poll in Rabha Hasong area, which is scheduled for February 12,” the official said.

The protesting organizations have called a 36 hour public curfew at the autonomous council areas in Goalpara and Kamrup (Rural) district starting on February 11.

On Saturday morning, some locals set ablaze a vehicle of a civil zonal officer appointed by the state government for the panchayat polls at Bordamal market in Goalpara district.

“Another police vehicle was damaged by protesters opposing panchayat elections in RHAC areas,” a police official said.

Security personnel of Assam police and para military forces have been deployed in Goalpara and Kamrup (Rural) district.
