Kaziranga Poachers Kill Ninth Rhino This Year

Poachers have continued their killing strikes in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) as poachers killed another one horned rhinoceros in the park and fled with its horn, officials said.

The incident took place in the Kaoimari area in the Bagori forest range in KNP on Saturday night, where poachers killed a rhino, cut off the horn and fled with it.

It is the ninth incident in the park, where poachers killed nine one horned rhinos this year, cutting the Park’s important rhino population.

“Forest guards recovered two 303 rifles, and empty cartridges near the body,” said an official of KNP.

Top officials of the forest department and police rushed to the area and launched a search operation for the poachers with a sniffer dog.

Several organizations condemned the rhino killings in Kaziranga National Park and protested against the failure of the Assam state government to protect wild animals.

Recently, Assam Chief Minister ordered a CBI inquiry into the rhino killings in Kaziranga.

In 2012, poachers killed 21 rhinos in Kaziranga National Park.
