India Celebrates Its Independence Day

The citizens of India today celebrated their sixty-fourth anniversary of their independence.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of India on their National Day.

“At this time of profound change and hope for millions of people, India’s story stands as a powerful example of what people can achieve through the peaceful pursuit of inalienable rights.” -Ms. Clinton

She stated that during her recent visit to India, she once again had the opportunity to experience India’s beauty, vitality, and dynamism. She stressed that the U.S.-India partnership – based on people-to-people ties and their shared values of democracy, liberty, and respect for religious and cultural diversity – will be one of the defining partnerships of this century.

Ms. Clinton emphasized that the United States looks forward to continuing to partner with India as the U.S. governemnt shares their story and successes with other countries around the world.

“As you celebrate this special day with family, friends and loved ones, in Chennai, New Delhi or anywhere in between, know that the United States stands with you as a committed partner and friend.” -Ms. Clinton
