Huge Cache of GNLA Arms and Ammunition Recovered in Assam

Assam has become a transit route for several outfit groups, who supplied arms and ammunition from Myanmar via Dimapur in Nagaland.

On Thursday, Meghalaya police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the Garo militant group, Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) near Williamnagar in East Garo Hills district.

Williamnagar SP JF Marak said, “the consignment of the militant group was recovered at Chinabat around 10:00 am on Thursday.”

“Based on intelligence reports, Meghalaya police SWAT and Cobra team launched an operation at Chinabat area near Williamnagar and recovered the arms,” the SP said.

“The consignment came from Dimapur via Guwahati in Assam in an Assam registration Mahindra Scorpio vehicle,” Marak said.

Police recovered one AK-47 rifle with magazine, one AK rifle UB grenade launcher, one AK rifle drum machine with stand, two UB grenade shells and six rounds live ammunition of AK series rifle, which were hidden in the vehicle.

Police arrested a suspected militant Veeb Sangma, while two others managed to escape.

In 2012, Guwahati city police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition of GNLA militant at Sonapur and Garchuk area, outskirts of Guwahati city.

Guwahati city SP (Operation) Ranjan Kumar Bhuyan said, “GNLA militants and other outfit groups regularly used routes of Assam for supplying arms and ammunition.”

“The illegal arms and ammunition came from Myanmar via Manipur and Dimapur,” Bhuyan said.
