Four GNLA Militants Killed in Encounter in Assam-Meghalaya Border

Four hardcore militant of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) were killed in an encounter with security forces in East Garo Hills district in Meghalaya along the Assam-Meghalaya border on Thursday, police said.

“Acting on a tip-off, a team of Meghalaya police launched an operation at Mongphangro village in the hills district on the wee hours of Thursday. Where a 15 members armed group were hiding in the village. When the security forces reached the spot the militant group fired and bullets were exchanged for an hour. Four militant of the group died on spot and others were managed to flee from the spot,” a senior police official said.

Among the slain militants, two were identified as Ringrang alias Danny Momin and Rakban alias Philipol Shira, police added.

Security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from the slain militants.

A high official sources said that, Paresh Baruah led anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and GNLA jointly established few camps in Garo Hills.

Some ULFA leaders, hiding in shelter at the GNLA camps and have been coordinating the outfit’s extortion operation in western Assam.

Security forces in Meghalaya and Assam have been put on high alert ahead of ULFA’s raising day on April 7.
