Guwahati: At least five people, including two children, were injured in a powerful explosion in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Monday evening, police said.
The explosion occurred around 5-45 pm on Monday at Bongaigaon town area in the lower Assam district.
“Suspected militants threw a hand grenade into the busy market area, where five people were injured,” a top police official said.
The injured persons were admitted to the Bongaigaon civil hospital.
Assam police prepared a strategy plan against militant groups in a high level security measure meeting on the evening of November 24.
“The extortion and kidnapping cases have been dramatically rising in the state in the past a year. During the year, three new militant groups were organized in the state. The union home ministry is also worried over the worsening situation of Assam,” Assam police ADGP AP Raout said.
The top police official also said Assam police and other security forces had launched an operation against the militant groups including ULFA(Independent), NDFB (Sangbijit group), GNLA in Assam and bordering areas of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
