CBI To Investigate Murder Of Gangaram Kaul, CPI (ML) Leader

Guwahati, April 2: The Assam state government has finally asked for a CBI probe into the Gangram Kaul maurder case.

Gangaram Kaul, a CPI (ML) leader, was killed by unknown assailants in the Panitola area in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on March 25. A former MLA and CPI (ML) candidate for the Lok Sabha poll in Dibrugarh constituency, Kaul was returning to his native village, Gutibari, after visiting Panitola town.

Allegations of it being a political murder arose because Kaul had been vocal about problems with welfare meant for tea tribes. There were calls for the CBI to investigate because it was feared the state police would not be impartial enough, and some words and actions by the government raised suggestions of a coverup.

Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, had earlier ordered a CID inquiry in the murder case.

Assam forest minister Rockybul Hussain on Monday told reporters that the state government had asked for a CBI probe into the murder case.

Several organizations and CPI (ML) leaders in Assam alleged that Gangaram Kaul was murdered in a political conspiracy and some leaders of the ruling congress party and an Assam state government parliamentary secretary were involved in the murder.

CPI (ML)s Tinsukia district committee filed an FIR against six people including Raju Sahu, MLA of Chabua constituency and parliamentary secretary of Assam state government alleging their involvement in the murder.

There had been many voices calling for a thorough investigation, and the state government on Monday finally gave in to the demands and asked for a CBI probe into the sensational murder.
