Assam Inaugurates 4th National Symposium on ‘HPC in Academia & Beyond’

Guwahati : Dr. Pradeep K. Sinha, Senior Director (HPC and R&D), C-DAC, India had inaugurated the 4th National Symposium on ‘HPC in Academia & Beyond’ held at Assam Engineering College, Guwahati on Saturday.

The event was organized by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the premier R&D arm of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Govt. of India and Assam Engineering College, Guwahati.

The event was specially launched for the faculty, PhD scholars, researchers and students in various engineering disciplines of Assam and the North Eastern region to exploit the benefits of Parallel Computing.

Dr. Pradeep K. Sinha who loves education scenario in North-East and said the region “was a goldmine of uptapped talent that could unravel the path to self development throughout the region. Just as a diamond needs polishing to discover its true luster, so do the young minds in the North-East states.

“It is a fact that technology is evolving every single second and to keep pace with it, is not going to be easy. However, a lot can change with the support from the government, and the interest of citizens. We need to have an open mind for learning and to quickly assimilate the best of what is happening around us, to be able to use it to our advantage. This will lead to innovation in products as well as services and create the ecosystem for economic self-sustenance. We are the world leaders in software technologies; we can be world leaders for HPC technologies as well, if we have the proper motivation. We need to think out-of-the-box to be able to realize our dreams. It is only then we can call ourselves true innovators,” Dr Sinha said.

This unique forum also included technological talks by eminent scientists such as Prof. L.M.Patnaik, IISC, Bangalore, Prof. N.V.Deshpande, Director, NIT, Silchar, Prof. Dhruba K. Bhattacharya, Dean, School of Engineering, Tezpur University, Tezpur as well as industry experts such as Mr. Niloy Mukherjee, Technical Computing, IBM Systems and Computing Group, India, Mr. Vijay Shimpukade, National Manager (HPC), Intel, India, Mr. Ananda Bhattacharjee, Chief Solution Architect (HPC), Nvidia Graphics Pvt. Ltd, India, Mr. Vijay Kakkar, Technical Consultant, Red Hat, India, Mr. Jigar Halani, Technical Consultant – HPC & Big Data, Wipro Infotech, India. Mr.Abhishek Das, Mr. Prasad Wadlakondawar, Mr. Deepu C V, Mr. Digvijay Gohain from C-DAC and Navajit Saikia with team members from AEC were present.

The topics covered by the speakers covered a whole range of speakers covered a whole range of HPC sub domains including Computer System Architecture, Distributed Computing, Parallel Computing, Cloud Computing, Structural Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and so on.

The one-day National Symposium expected to serve as a sound foundation for accelerating adoption of education tools and curriculum that reflects the increasing role of HPC methods in engineering and science. This symposium will enable the aspiring engineers and scientists of all disciplines to opt for a career in High Performance Computing and its allied areas.

Dr. Atul Bora, Director of Technical Education, Government of Assam and Principal, Assam Engineering College, Prof. L.M.Patnaik, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, Prof N.V. Deshpande, Director, NIT, Silchar and other eminent personalities from the academia and industry also present in the function.

The symposium was aimed at creating awareness on High Performance Computing (HPC) and its potential benefits to the academic/engineering segment and to the country as a whole.
