Assam Government to Open New Press Lounge for Journalists

Assam Chief Minister’s Gesture Applauded

Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) welcomed the decision of Assam government to provide a press lounge for working journalists inside the Asom Sachibaloy, Dispur.

The journalists, who cover activities in the Secretariat, were demanding some working space with necessary facilities such as furniture, internet connected computers, telephone/fax, cable connected television, and video-conferencing. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi took the initiative to provide the press lounge on the ground floor of the CM’s block in the Secretariat.

The chief minister has already directed his press adviser, Bharat Chandra Narah to initiate the necessary steps to allocate the room with necessary furniture and other accessories for smooth functioning of the press lounge, according to a press communique issued by the CMO on Saturday.

The EMFA also reiterated its long-standing demands for improvement of salaries, working atmosphere, life and health insurance for the television journalists and other media employees in Assam.

As the electronic media employees are not covered by the Majithia Wage Board (designed for print media employees in India), the EMFA urged the State government to formulate guidelines for the benefit of thousands of electronic media employees in Assam.
