Assam Gears Up to Celebrate Rongali Bihu Festival

The people of Assam are gearing up to celebrate the Rongali Bihu festival.

Preparations are in full swing across the state to celebrate one of biggest festivals in Assam which mark the new year calendar of the Assamese society.

More than thousand bihu sanmilanis have organised the Rongali bihu festival in different parts of the state from today.

In Guwahati, more than 50 bihu sanmilanis have organised various programme including bihu dance competition, mukoli bihu (open bihu), cultural programmes.

“Our preparatitions are almost finalised for the celebration Rongali Bihu. We are planning to exhibit various culture and traditions of diffrent ethnic tribes of the state,” a bihu organiser of Guwahati said.

Bihu is the greatest festival of Assamese people. Rongali bihu or Bohag bihu is one of the most important of three bihu festival including Rongali bihu, Kati bihu and Magh bihu.

The festival begins from the last day of the month Chaitra. The first day of the bihu is called “Uruka”.
