US ‘Outraged’ by Syrian Regime Actions Against Delegates to Geneva II

Syrian regime tries to silent the cries of its people

The United States of America is “outraged” by reports that the Assad regimes has arrested kin of the Syrian opposition coalition delegation to the Geneva II

According to media reports, the Syrian regime has arrested relatives of the opposition’s delegation to the Geneva peace talks.

Among those arrested was Mahmoud Sabra, the brother of Geneva delegation member, Mohammed Sabra.

In addition, the regime designated the designated delegates as terrorists, and seized delegates’ assets.

The United States of America is also calling for the immediate release of those relatives arrested by the regime.

In her remarks in Washington DC, Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki said such actions blatantly disregard the international community’s welcome, through unanimously approved UN Security Council Resolution 2139, of the Geneva talks.

“We call on the regime to immediately and unconditionally release all those unfairly arrested, including Mahmoud Sabra, brother of Geneva delegation member Mohammed Sabra.” – Ms. Psaki

Syrian regime continues to brutalize the Syrian people

Ms. Psaki described the arrests as an attempts to silence the cry of the people. However, these actions are not new behavior for the Assad regime.

She said the Assad regime continues to brutalize the Syrian people through aerial bombardment and other indiscriminate attacks that maim and kill civilians by the thousands.

In addition, political and arbitrary imprisonment, and the systematic torture and death of tens of thousands of people without access to due process, are but a few of the regime’s documented human rights violations.

The Geneva II Conference on Syria is a UN-backed international peace conference on the future of Syria. It aims to convene the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition to discuss steps towards a transitional government for Syria with full executive powers.

The conference took place on 22nd January 2014 in Montreux and on 23-31 January 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland. The second round of negotiations took place on 10-15 February 2014.
