US Condemns Iran’s Continued Violations of Various Security Council Resolutions

U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Susan E. Rice today said the United States condemns Iran’s continued violations of various Security Council resolutions as well as the IAEA Board of Governors.

At the Security Council stakeout after a Security Council briefing on the Iran sanctions committee, Ms. Rice said the U.S. government is particularly concerned about reports that there is the loading of and preparation for the spinning of centrifuges at the Qom facility, which is a flagrant and blatant violation of existing sanctions.

“And at the same time, we underscored the importance of continued toughened enforcement of the sanctions regime that exists under 1929 and its predecessors.” -Ms. Rice

She stated that the United States is also pleased at the Committee and the Panel of Experts have been active in this regard, and that there is indeed a growing will among the international community to enforce the sanctions effectively.

“And yet, at the same time, we expressed our dismay and concern that there are still some members of the Sanctions Committee that are not amenable at this stage to the publication on the website of the Panel of Experts’ latest report, which, in our view is a failure of the mandate of the Committee.” -Ms. Rice

Ms. Rice stressed that Iran violates the principles and the purposes of transparency for which the Committee and the Panel were established.

“We will continue to press for the full and timely publication of the Panel of Experts’ report.” -Ms. Rice

Ms. Rice cited that Iran has committed numerous reported violations over the course of the past year, particularly in the realm of arm shipments that the committee and the panel have investigated.
